Falling for Fall

We had some great fall weather last weekend. Cool mornings and sunny, warm afternoons. When this time of the year is upon us, my nesting instincts kick in and I decided to make some homemade comfort food.

I can always tell when summer is coming, as my mother-in-law will always tell me about her last pan of lasagna for the season. I decided to kick off the beginning of fall with some yummy vegetarian lasagna.

I don’t like the extremes of summer and winter, but fall is definitely my favorite time of the year.

Here are some other things I look forward to when fall rolls around:

  • Putting up the Halloween and fall decorations
  • The Hillbilly Chili Cook-off, usually a great day to eat some good chili, a funnel cake and browse crafts
  • Fires in the fire pit and woodstove
  • Dutch oven cooking
  • The return of the few shows we watch on television (Yay! Dexter!)
  • Rotating the closet and “discovering” my fall/winter clothes again
  • The colors and walking along the road hearing the crispy leaves crunch

What do you look forward to most in the fall?

  1. It’s my favorite season in Austin. The temperature *finally* dips below the triple digits and the pace picks up. Also, I never have gotten over the feeling that the start of the school year is a new beginning.

  3. I love fall. Though this year is a little hard for me since my mother died in the fall (sad face) last year. Lasagna is a good idea! My kids love it and it’s been eons since I’ve made any…

Condolences on the loss of your mother, Jennifer. I feel the same at the end of February, which is the anniversary of my mother’s death.

I appreciate New England foliage because I was deprived of it for the 25 years I lived in France.

    • Kerri says:

Ah, yes, the New England autumns, legendary! Unfortunately, they were just talking last night on the news about how our autumn will not be very pretty due to the drought. Good thing I have plenty of photos from last year!

I love the way the angle of light changes — you really can ‘see thigns in a new light’ on autumn mornings and evenings. a fine companion for walking meditation. then there are the pumpkins, both to enjoy looking at and to cook with…

Great observation, Kerry! I was noticing the other day how the mid morning light is different in Our Little House this time of year.

I absolutely love sleeping with the windows open~

  7. I love to bake with apples and pumpkins, put up my fall decorations, put away the awning on the deck, have the first fire of the year and appreciate the cooler weather.

While I like the coolness and beauty of fall, I don’t like the fact that it leads to my least favorite season…Winter.

    • Kerri says:

I’ve come to the conclusion that winter will arrive whether we like it or not, so I try to take each day as it comes and enjoy it to the fullest. 🙂

For me, it’s the cooler temps at night. I live in Florida and it’s still hot/warm during the day but in the evenings the temp. is cooler (70’s)& lovely…..

  10. For me, getting up and taking my walk early in the morning is the best part. I walk up and down a few steep hills; one overlooks a breathtaking valley. The gold, reds, and browns on the trees color the scene. When it’s early fog rises up and give it an other-worldly, ethereal feel. I love fall.
