The Lights of Our Interior Life

I love decorating with lighting. You can tell by how giddy I get around the holidays when I first put out the Halloween treeor when I convince Dale to line the porch railings with Christmas lights. I also love decorating inside with lights year round and I think it brings more character to a small space.

I haven’t yet convinced Dale that putting up Christmas-like twinkle lights would be pretty, but I did put up this strand of lantern lights on our coat rack. I got the idea a couple of years ago after Christmas.

Our tree sits in that corner during the holidays and when it was gone, I missed the lights. These lantern lights had been sitting in the basement doing nothing since we built Our Little House. Unfortunately, they didn’t last. I think they’re one of those strands that blink out if one light goes. They aren’t expensive and I have already ordered a new strandfor these long winter nights.

Lanterns and bears are a theme throughout Our Little House and we have a cute bear nightlight in the bathroom. Getting from our bedroom to the bathroom in the middle of the night, however, can be tricky in a small house with multiple dogs.

So, when I saw this lantern at an outdoor store a couple of years ago, I bought it for the kitchen. It is bright enough to light the way in the dark of night.

Finally, this salt lamp sits atop our dresser in the bedroom. Salt lamps are said to have all kinds of air-clearing and healing properties. We haven’t noticed that, but it does produce a pretty glow in the bedroom. I’ve made it part of my sacred spiritual space, too.

The other day while watching television, I saw a pretty display of greenery with twinkle lights atop kitchen cabinets that like the ones in Our Little House, are recessed from the ceiling. I love it, maybe I’ll get those twinkle lights after all!
