Decorating for the Holidays in a Small Space

I love fall (although not the winter that follows) and I love decorating for Halloween and later, for Christmas. There have been a lot of posts on the tiny house pages asking how to decorate while living tiny. The answer for me is simple: Outdoor space.

I told Dale as we were coming back from a walk one evening this week that I really love my Halloween tree. I’ve always put the orange light decorated tree on the porch of the Belle Writers Studio. It’s hooked up to a timer and comes on automatically during the dark hours of evening/night and early in the morning.

This makes it a seasonal light in the darkness as I look out the windows of Our Little House up the driveway and a welcoming light when we’re coming home from errands or an evening out.

“We have another one in the garage,” he said, which reminded me of the main reason I love this tree. My mother made it as part of her crafting business. When we cleaned out her duplex, she had an extra that hadn’t sold on hand. I brought it with us.

Most of my extensive Halloween décor is outside, but I do have a few treasured small things inside:

A ceramic pumpkin (that’s been glued back together) that I bought for my first apartment.

  • A ceramic ghost I painted many years ago when I did ceramics.
  • A little pumpkin guy my friend, Lora, brought to Our Little House during our first Slumber Party weekend after she read on the blog many of my decorations had suffered mildew damage.
  • A lighted pumpkin in the Belle Writer’s Studio
  • Our newest decorations. The first We call “Bones.” He is a plastic skeleton dog. His eyes light up and he growls and barks. We wanted to see how the Fab Four would react to him. Dexter was scared. Chloe curious. Abbi and Arkie, not fazed!
  • This cute Halloween lantern I put out with my new setting on my covered front porch. Isn’t he adorable!?

The key, I think to decorating for the holidays in a small house is to make use of the outdoor space for large décor and keep the indoors small and understated.

I have as much enjoyment here, if not more, than I did decorating in our full sized house!

How do you decorate for holidays?

Oh that tree! Who wouldn’t be excited to see a soft orange glow coming out of the woods to mark your own private space? I love it! I’m a big fan of colored lights illuminating our happy place. Enjoy the season Kerri.
