Winds of Change at Our Little House

The only color left to my plants are two little grape tomatoes

Have I mentioned before that it has been a long, hot summer?

Our drought finally broke on Wednesday afternoon and we received some much needed rain.

While I’m usually not one to thank the thunder Gods or embrace the darkness, I turned on an extra lamp in the Belle Writer’s Studio and enjoyed the sound of pelting rain on the roof, glad that what vegetation had survived the drought was getting a good drink.

Dale calls this the “ugly part of summer,” when everything is brown or dying. We have trees that have already lost almost all of their leaves.

Some of our leaves have just turned brown

A cool front promises to bring us some extra cool mornings and a glorious weekend for this last unofficial weekend of summer.

With the change of the seasons, the winds of change our mixing up some things at Our Little House as well.

Beginning next week, I’ll be doing regular posts on Tuesday and Thursday. I have some new writing projects that are demanding more of my time and I would much rather provide you with quality content than worry about quantity.

I still have some guest posts and giveaways lined up and when I have one for you, I will continue to post those on Fridays.

Dale has a well-deserved 3-day weekend this Labor Day, so I will be taking time off with him and hopefully, getting out on the lake.

If you have time this weekend, or aren’t blessed with good weather, take some time to browse the archives.

To our community on the East Coast, I will be sending positive vibes to you through your encounter with Earl.

We’ll see you back at Our Little House on Tuesday!

In appreciation to your continued visits to Our Little House,

Kerri

What will you be doing this Labor Day weekend?

  1. The ugly part of summer! Exactly.

Always a fan of quality over quantity. That is why I love my RSS– I never have to miss a post!

  3. Mary says:

It has been a beautiful day in Montgomery County AR. I'm so grateful for the cooler temps. We did get a little rain but it is still so dry that everything is still crunchy when I take Mickey out for his walk. Hoping for more rain next week. I think we probably won't have much "color" this fall this it's been so very dry.

    • kerri says:

Yes, Mary, I think the rain we got was too little, too late. We have yet to experience a beautiful fall in the Ozarks. The conditions just never seem to be right.

  4. We too have brown leaves coming down in piles early due to a dry summer after an unusually rainy spring that produced heavy foliage. It makes me sad to see it feeling so much like fall so soon!

I know, Melanie. Having taken the dogs for a walk this morning, I thought we were walking on a leaf-covered driveway in October, rather than early September!

  5. Debbie says:

We FINALLY got some rain yesterday here in Oklahoma. Today is cooler and this evening is downright wonderful outside! Have a great 3 day weekend!

    • kerri says:

Thanks, Debbie! It's been a good one! You must have gotten the same weather we did this week. Glorious.

We will be dealing with Earl this weekend. It seems to be taking a direct hit at Nova Scotia so we are in the target path **sigh**. I guess it's the price we pay for having had a perfect summer. Temps, for the most part, mid 20's (Celsius), no humidity, rainfall at night. Crops are lush and in good shape (although who knows what they will look like after Earl passes by!).

The last few days were hot and steamy, which we are not used to, but thank goodness we are only 10 minutes from the most beautiful beaches in Canada. Yes, this summer I feel blessed (although I always feel blessed to live in this tiny, beautiful province). Just too bad about the hurricanes …

  7. Kim says:

Sixty degrees here this morning, and a second downpour last night to finish soaking the earth again. The end of a drought is a delicious thing!

Enjoy the lake, and congrats on the new writing gigs!

  8. Heather says:

The seasons seem confused here in the Pacific Northwest. We've barely had any weather over 70 degrees and my tomatoes have just begun to ripen. Hope you have a cool and pleasant holiday weekend, Kerri.

    • Kerri says:

I've been watching the weather reports in the Pacific NW, Heather, you were definitely cheated out of a summer. Wish we could have bottled some of our heat and sent it to you!

  9. Alexandra says:

Hope you have a good weekend! Yes, here everything is drying up earlier than usual because of the lack of rain over a long part of the summer, an hotter temperatures than usual.

  10. V Schoenwald says:

Have a great and well-deserved Holiday weekend, Kerri.
I am sending you cool air your way, it was 35* here this morning in Nebraska where I am, Woo-Hoo!
    Enjoy!

    • Kerri says:

Caught the air you sent, but by the time it reached us it was in the low 60s! :) Thank goodness we aren't looking at 35 quite yet. Picky aren't I?

  11. Kerri says:

Two of my potted plants sprouted blooms after the rains this week. Makes the deck look a little less pitiful. Have a good weekend!

It gets that way here in western NY state too. This is the time of year when I give up on my plants. I've abandoned the two hanging baskets on the front porch because they were just getting brown and ugly no matter how well I watered them. One of the maple trees in our front yard has one branch that is all red leaves, which the rest of the tree is green. We're due for some rain today and tomorrow, which we really need as well. We're also expecting a few days of much cooler temps before we go back into the 80s again.
