That's also what I love about my front porch. There's just deep woods directly in front of it.
I had to battle the builders on not cutting some of the trees closest to the house, and I'm glad I did!

Porches are a great way to watch the world go by, and watch nature undetected. I have a back porch that I love b/c it's very secluded and I feel like I'm deep in the woods even though I'm not.

Wow, that's a great story, Kathy! We watched a hawk with our binoculars on the lake last weekend. When he left the tree he was in, he attacked something in another tree, we heard it fall but couldn't see what it was. You're right, that's pretty common here, or outside of the city, but to see one actually swoop down in your backyard in the suburbs must have been really something!
Thanks for reading.

We have a sun room on the back of our house where I like to have my morning coffee. A large picture window gives full view of our back yard, with its towering oak trees, my flower beds and the various critters that make their home in Prairie Village. A few years ago, the chipmunk population exploded in our area. They are destructive little pests that tunnel under concrete driveways and garage floors, sometimes to such an extent that the concrete cracks and breaks down. They also do a real number on my flowers.

One of the upsides to the chipmunk invasion, is that several different species of hawks moved into the neighborhood to take advantage of the plentiful supply of rodents. I was once sitting at the table in the sun room, watching a chipmunk skittering around in some dead leaves, when a huge red tailed hawk dropped from the sky, grasped the chipmunk in its talons, paused a moment, looked around, then flapped its wings and lifted into the sky with its wriggling breakfast between its claws. We've had all kinds of wildlife encounters at our land in the country, but seeing a wild hawk capture its prey right outside my window in Prairie Village was really exciting! I love animals, and chipmunks are so darn cute they they are hard to hate. However, I must say that I wasn't sorry to know there was one less in our yard to mess up my flower beds!

Great topic Kerri!
